Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Department of Safety and Security at the UNOG Security and Safety Service in Geneva.
The Security Coordinator Officer reports to the Chief and/or the Deputy Chief of the Service and acts as Assistant Chief of Security.
Responsibilites
Within delegated authority, the Security Coordinator Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Prepares draft of security plan to area of responsibility, including all aspects related to elaboration, development, implementation and updating of the plan.
- Maintains continuing lines of communication with relevant security focal points and representatives of other agencies to ensure maximum security coordination.
- Serves as a representative of the UNOGSSS in the works related to Security Management Team for Switzerland, contributing to preparation, implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of the security plan (including attendance of working groups aimed at the preparation of the Crisis Management Plan and the Business Continuity Plan).
- Assesses prevailing security conditions, identifying security trends and advising on potential security concerns affecting UN assets, activities and interests.
- Ensures that fire detection devices and fire-fighting equipment are available on the premises.
Maintains fire evacuation plan and conducts fire drills and training as necessary.
- Interacts with relevant parties involved in the preparation of external security engagements, including UN external conferences, provision of technical support, and close protection missions, by ensuring that the process for the preparation of these tasks is efficient and its implementation consistent with the mandate of the Service.
- Maintains dialog with authorities and international institutions to ensure the optimal level of crisis preparedness, and acts as dissemination point for host country information relevant to the Switzerland-based UN organizations.
- Ensures the establishment and maintenance of an efficient communications system to ensure that UN staff may be reachable in case of need.
- Investigates accidents involving UN vehicles and prepares report of findings.
- Assumes responsibility for guard force management.
- Maintains protection detail for senior officials as necessary.
- Conducts security training related to security management system, and represents the Service in the preparation of presentations to parties.

Ability to apply technical skills to understand and consolidate the varying specializations such as electronics, communications, mechanisms, explosives, and other sophisticated devices encountered in security management systems. Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in security management, business administration, political/social science, psychology, international relations or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job - Specific Qualification
Completion of Security Certification Programme (SCP) is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in military, police, security management is required.
At least three years' experience at a managerial level is desirable.
Experience with an international organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English or French and knowledge of the other is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
